Chapter Twenty-Seven
Helen watched as Sharni expertly guided the children into perfect poses for their photograph. It had been Sharniâs idea to create a Christmas backdrop. Helen was impressed with her patience. She made the children feel at ease and managed to get a smile from each child as she clicked the shutter. It was quite true, Helen thought, you should never judge a book by its cover. Maybe Clare had it all wrong about Sharni.
âA great find,â Geoff smiled.
âWe should hire her,â said Helen. âSheâs got the patience of a saint.â
âAll credit to you for finding her.â
âOh, I didnât find her as such. She lives right next door to Clare.â
âHow about a group teacher photo,â Sharni called.
âOoh, one of us. That makes a change,â laughed Helen.
âItâs not normally what we do,â said Geoff uncertainly. âBut I agree itâs a good idea. We donât have all the staff in today though.â
âWe could phone around,â said Helen. âWeâre only three down. Do you want to call Clare?â Helen asked Sharni.
Sharniâs face clouded over. âIâll leave that to you,â she smiled but Helen sensed her discomfort.
The other teachers laughed amongst themselves.
âAre you sure you donât mind?â asked Geoff. âI donât imagine weâll be able to do it until after the kids finish at three.â
âThatâs fine,â smiled Sharni. âIâm enjoying it.â
âIâll take Sharni for lunch shall I?â Helen said hopefully. It would make a change for her to take someone to lunch on school expenses. Geoff got to do it all the time so he couldnât very well say no.
âOf course, just put it on expenses. Weâll see you after lunch to do year three.â
âGreat, letâs go to the little place around the corner,â said Helen, helping Sharni to pack up her equipment. âBest put all this in the headâs office.â
